5 Easy Ways to Remove Acne Scars Naturally

Updated on May 06, 2016
Acne Scars
Acne Scars | Source

If you are a fellow acne sufferer, then you don't need to know how utterly traumatizing it can be. To add insult to injury, after all the unsightly ravages it subjects your skin to, acne leaves scars as an ever-present reminder.

I've personally suffered from acne as far back as my early teens and I've picked up a fair bit of scars along the way. So if your acne scarring isn't very deep, these methods— which worked for me— may work for you.

Source

1. Egg Whites

Egg whites have very powerful healing qualities that will help heal your scarring and eventually make it less visible. Egg white is full of proteins and amino acids which can tighten the pores to prevent new breakouts while it lightens the scarred skin.

  • Take a small bowl and whip the whites of three eggs until they become fluffy and white.
  • Use your fingers to gently spread the egg whites on to your skin, concentrating on the problem areas.
  • Let the stuff dry on your skin and then rinse away gently with moderately warm water.
  • Do this 2-3 times a week.

Source

2. Baking Soda

Baking soda is coarse but not that coarse— its small particles should not damage the skin. If applied correctly, it will gently slough off the top layer of dead skin cells without causing your sensitive facial skin to become irritated or inflamed.

  • Simply mix a small amount of baking soda with water to make a consistent paste. Very gently massage this onto your skin and leave it on for one minute before rinsing it off with lukewarm water.
  • Remember to always moisturize your skin afterwards; I massage a few drops of olive oil on my face and it works very well.
  • Repeat this 2-3 times a week or depending on your exfoliation routine.

Source

3. Lemon Juice

Lemon juice contains citric acid which, along with lactic and glycolic acids, is one of the most commonly found Alpha Hydroxy Acids or AHAs. AHAs are very well known for their cosmetic usage. Many skin care products, including anti-aging creams and chemical peels, have AHAs as a key ingredient. Topical application of AHAs is said to induce an increased production of collagen and increased skin thickness, all of which equates to more healing for scarred skin.

Additionally, lemon juice, due to it natural acidic content, is a powerful disinfectant which helps in destroying acne-causing bacteria and is a natural exfoliant which removes dead skins cells and facilitates the formation of new healthy skin. Furthermore, it helps in lightening the skin tone which helps in countering the effects of hyper-pigmentation, another souvenir of your acne days.

What to do:

  • Ensure that your skin is clean by washing it with a mild acne cleanser.
  • Squeeze 1-3 lemons into a bowl.
  • Take a cotton ball and dab it with the juice. Apply the juice to effected areas completely but don't overdo it.
  • Repeat this 2-3 times a week.

If you have sensitive skin, the juice may sting, but it will likely happen only the first couple of times. If the stinging accompanies significant redness, then discontinue usage because your skin is far too sensitive for this method. I have sensitive skin but it was bearable and the sensation did go away after the third application, so its still a very workable solution for those with sensitive skins, but you need to pay attention to your skin's reaction.

Source

4. Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera juice or gel is a fantastic way to remove acne scars. Not only does it soothe inflamed skin, it also boosts the immune system and regenerates damaged tissue. Its mild acerbic qualities ensure that with regular usage, acne breakouts can be prevented, resulting in a softer skin, decreased swelling, invigorated new cell growth, and a reduction in acne scars. Many in the cosmetic industry are recognizing the importance of this miracle plant and incorporating its extracts in many skin care products.

You can buy over-the-counter aloe products but I strongly recommend growing an aloe vera plant in your very backyard (believe me it isn't a hassle) or buy it in its all natural form without additives.

Source

5. Olive Oil

Olive oil is packed with iron and vitamins A, D, E, C, B1, and B2. Vitamin E is increasingly being recognized as an important player in helping the fight against the aging process. Olive oil is rich in anti-oxidants and anti-inflammatories and helps prevent acne and removes acne scars effectively. Because olive oil is non-comedogenic (i.e it doesn't clog pores) and because it effectively dissolves dirt and oil trapped within our already clogged pores, it is a good scar treatment.

  • Before going to bed, gently massage olive oil onto your skin, concentrating on the trouble spots.
  • Continue massaging for a few minutes till you can feel that your pores are completely saturated.
  • Drape a warm washcloth over your face to steam and hence open the pores.
  • Gently wipe away the excess oil.
  • Repeat the process 1-2 times before rinsing your face with cold water.

Remember

I'm not a skin specialist of any kind. These are methods that I and a few of my friends have tried. Natural skin care methods come without any significant side-effects and are kind to your skin but the drawback is that it's going to take time.

Use any one of these methods at a time because you don't want to irritate your skin. The exception to this rule would be the aloe vera and the olive oil methods, because their gentle and strong healing properties may be combined with and complement the other methods.

Good luck in getting a clear, glowing, acne and scar-free skin.

you did all this at the same time? i mean your doin all of these within a week?

@ Cyrn : Nope, I tried them one after the other with enough rest in between. Don't, I say again - Don't try them all at once otherwise your skin will be in for a very rough ride and you might actually end up with a pretty nasty skin condition.

Baking Soda didn't work that well for me because my skin is very sensitive though I've heard and seen it work quite nicely for others. Lemon Juice has the tendency of lightening your scars but it does sting a little; so I tried it to good effect but the stinging gave my cheeks a reddish tinge so I stopped using it. But my personal favourites have to be Olive Oil - full of goodness, and Aloe Vera - a miracle plant, from what I've heard. Those two worked really well for me and no I didn't try them all at once nor would it take within a week for you to see results. As a general rule - Natural treatments are cheap and generally without side effects but they take a while to take effect.

I hope that answers your question.

Hey guys, thanks for your comments ! I think I'll answer all of them over here :

      1) Do they work ? - Yes they do but like all things home-made they're not going to show results over night, they certainly won't be as good as what a Professional will do and they do need to be used with caution.

      2) How long did it take ? - I dunno it took me quite a while for my scars to be visibly less prominent...so perhaps 6 months would be a good bet !

      3) Should you try them all at once ? - Good God No ! Not unless you want to mess up your skin pretty bad. I'd recommend starting with Aloe Vera juice and then Egg whites ! Olive Oil has a tendency to clog pores for some and so it might make you break out but if it works for you its a very good thing. Baking Soda again is something that seems to help a few people and irritate others (myself included); it did wonders for my acne but I ended up overusing it and so I did have a red tinge on my cheeks ! Use it..if it works for you but if you've got sensitive skin like mine...I'd recommend sticking with Aloe Vera and Egg Whites.

      4) Can it be used on the back and the legs ? - Indeed it can be ! In fact Baking Soda helped clear my back-acne quite nicely and it helped fade the blemishes too !

Lastly, you must realize that not everything works for everyone and sometimes experimenting too much has the propensity of messing up your skin so try those things out slowly, give your skin ample time to respond and at any point if it feels discomforting stop right there...it might not be for you ! So most of all 'listen to your skin' ! Good luck with fading your scars.

      boneclinx,

I have used many natural remedies to heal many things. I think baking soda works for the same reason lemon works: pH that kills bacteria and fungus. There is even an Italian doctor, Tulio Simoncini, who cures cancer using baking soda. He shows in many videos and lab tests that most "cancer" is actually systemic fungus. Fungus is too simple to live through a radical pH shift, and dies.

    • boneclinx690 profile image
      Author

boneclinx690 4 years ago from Neverland

Also @ Ally : Because my scars weren't deep to begin with a combination of olive oil to moisturize the skin and baking soda to remove the upper layers of the skin, I was able to, over time, remove as much of the scar tissue as possibly. Of course they're still there but they're barely noticeably compared with what they used to be. Now barring a slight depression near my left ear, the rest of my face is pretty even.

A word of caution still : Baking Soda has a tendency of irritating the skin because what your essentially doing is that your removing the top layer of the skin to help out newer skin to emerge. And olive oil also has been known to break some people out so whatever you do (and this goes out to all !) remember to test it on a small patch of your skin first to gauge its suitability to your skin type and even then begin very slowly before gradually increasing their use. Either way remember - Listen to your skin !

I suddenly suffered severe acne last year end . I've never really suffered from severe acne just a few during my monthlys . Everyone I met was devastated seeing my skin cos I have always been the pretty one . Some people said I was cursed by some ex lover , some said I was too conceited so god punished me lol . None of that bullshit mattered to me I was still confident I could fight this acne battle n still continued to live my life . I tired all sorts of stuff ppl told me or online but nothing helped then decided i needed profesional help I went to a dermatologist n did blood check etc etc n found out I lacked vitamin d in my body . Vitamin d helps the liver function well n purifies blood so since I lacked vitamin d it my blood wasn't getting purified . So I started my medication eating tabs n applying ointments etc starting January by march my acne improved significantly by April I had no more pimples not even during my months n now it's almost August n I am pimple freeeeeee n my scars have all gone . I Owe my life to my dr :) so I'm sharing my story because I know how it feels to struggle with acne n try different products hearing others but I suggest u visit a dermo since everyone has different skin n case :) good luck u all

My mom usually puts everything in the fridge on her face. Honestly, the lady is 60 but due to her excessive skin care products and natural food skin care procedures, she doesn't look a day over 28.

I've caught her putting rice water, yogurt, egg whites, strawberries, lemon drops, cucumbers, black coffee, milk. I think I'll eat mommy's face for breakfast tomorrow.

Lol interesting hub. I enjoyed it. Thanks

@ H : If anecdotal evidence is anything to go by all of them have worked for one person or the other; at the same time some of them haven't been entirely helpful to some and have even had a negative impact on some. So at the end of the day these are just helpers collected by myself detailing what I and people I know tried and what worked for them. For example - Baking Soda isn't something that seems to be working so well for me and it instead ends up irritating my skin but it along with a good moisturizer has worked wonders for others so you really have to decide yourself ! If there is any pointer that I can give it is - Listen to your skin and start slowly and once you've started...keep on listening to your skin !

      @ All : Thanks guys, I appreciate the input ! :)

@ nishitha : I'm a guy so I've never had much of an issue with facial hair and so I dunno about this but I don't think that it should do anything of the sort ! But I do suggest that you read up more on that just to be sure. And yeah most of all remember that your skin is the best judge of whether something's working or not, no article or anything is a substitute for that so listen to it and try to respond accordingly ! A little stinging sensation is fine and you should start very slowly and in small amounts but if the stinging persists or is a bit too much then its best to head over to something more suited to your skin type; I'd recommend Aloe Vera !

@ Adriana : I've always used Aloe Vera grown out off my garden so I don't know how natural the product that your talking about is ! I hope it works out and I'm sure that if it doesn't have any harmful chemicals in it, it should work out just fine ! Read the ingredients listed and as a general rule the more they are the less natural the product is or so I've understood it to be. Cheers.

@ Tarusila : I've said this to others and I'll say this again ! Please whatever you do start slowly and use only small amounts because Baking Soda may actually irritate sensitive skin ! For example I'm exclusively on Aloe Vera because Baking Soda for some reason worked pretty good for me at first but then it started giving my skin a reddish raw tinge ! Though I've heard of and seen others experiencing amazing results with it without any problems whatsoever ! So as a general rule : Start out slow and listen to your skin on how to proceed !

      Cheers, guys !

@ vVs - I really don't know what the difference between the two is so I can't comment on that. Maybe it'll work...maybe it won't ! Its best if you try it out on a fairly little area and see how the skin responds.

@ reef : Don't ! I repeat 'Don't' use all 3 of them at once ! That will irritate the heck out of your skin; go slow ! Go one step at a time and if something works stick with it instead of changing just for the sake of it. Above all listen to the skin ! No article is a substitute for what it says.

@ ryan : It varies ! I've always had irritable skin so I don't usually go for that but when I do I try to keep it under 15 minutes. Others often apply it and then sleep on it so I suppose you'd have to find out what works for you ! Apply it on a small area and see how the skin responds and even then start very slowly. If it burns...stop ! Go back and try it yet slower still and if that persists then move onto the next remedy (and the Baking Soda thing probably isn't for you if the Lemon burns).

i think out of your 5 i would say for me the egg whites ,lemon and baking soda works best ..i haven't tried olive oil or aloe vera because i have sensitive oily-combination skin and i live in the tropic .i am 18 years old turning 19 soon .i cant stay outside so much because of the UV-light some people did offer and advice me to wear a few skin care product and sunscreen but again ,most of them just irritate my skin and cause more acne to pop out of my face .i always have difficultly of using skin care product and im barely compatibly to most of them ,i cant wear make-up because i also get irritation .

before i actually went to the dermatologist (this doesn't help much )because of a bad reaction towards a skin care product i was diagnose by the doctor that i have acne vulgaris ? so they perscribe me with antibiotic .which after 6 moths of treatment left me back to how i was when i was 12 fulll of acne scar on my face .i actually used these before when i was 16 and it worked very well ,except i didn't whip my egg white and i only use one egg .i just refrigerate the egg and separate and let it soaked on tissue paper that i would place on my face for 15 min or until it is dry (slightly damp) i do this at least once a week and and after you remove the tissue paper and wash your face it's better to take an ice cube and rub it across your face . i learn that trick from the internet and it works wonder . i wore mask at least twice a week .three days seperation .and i wore the baking soda mask once a month but for only 30 seconds duration . the lemon juice i only used when i break out and i just drop them directly on top of the acne and wash it away after 1 min .im very high maintenance but i just have to since all odd are not in my favour . after reading your article maybe i would try olive oil . now im using aloe vera but it for the after sun screen it moisturise my skin .i used it at night before i sleep .i hope this helps in a way just sharing my opinion :D

Thank You people for the comments, I appreciate it ! :)

Okay it appears that two questions keep popping up :

      (1) Will they remove your scars completely ?

Ans : No ! Nothing will...not even laser from the talk I've had with dermatologists. What they'd do is that they'd reduce their appearance to an acceptably low level. For example, my own, scars aren't that visible anymore unless someone makes a point of barging into my face & then inspecting them. Nothing...I say again - Nothing, will remove acne scars permanently !

The reason I'd recommend natural remedies in favor of some of the other options out there is that they're cheap, they do take time but they work as well & they, as a general rule, don't have side-effects.

      (2) Can I use all of them at once ?

Ans - No..don't ! I repeat DON'T use all of them at once; in fact start with Aloe Vera or Olive Oil & that too lightly, before going for the other options (especially Baking Soda). You do not want to irritate your skin to the point it reacts by you either having red inflamed skin or a break-out ! So ease it in & remember ! REMEMBER : Nothing is as good a judge of whether something is working for you or not & whether you should continue or not, than your OWN skin ! So listen to it. Start out slow & then build it up...this isn't a sprint its a marathon & its going to take time so ease yourself into it.

Thanks for your hub. I have acne issues and the olive oil treatment works. I have been doing it about 2 months now. It is slower than the chemical creams, but I get the feeling that the effect will last longer. I think the bleaching chemicals bleach the skin quickly but if you stop using the product then you are back where you started. I feel that these natural remedies provide a lasting and safe way to help our skin issues.

I would suggest in addition to using a warm towel to steam, to actually steam with water. To boil some water and place in a bowl, put a towel over you head and let your face absorb the steam for around 10 minutes then rinse with cold water to close the pores.

Hi there, your article was really informative. It's good to know that most of these treatments were actually applied by you, unlike some articles that claim these things work but provide no proofs. I am definitely gonna use some of these remedies, maybe switch b/w egg whites, aloe vera gel n lemon for my backacne. I've never suffered from this prob before until a yr ago when I went through a surgery.

In fact, I started using Olive Oil as a moisturizer a couple of days ago before coming across this article and was surprised to know that this actually and might possibly work in reducing acne scars. But does it really matter what kind of Olive Oil you use? There are so many kinds to choose from like Virgin, Extra Virgin, Cold-pressed... so I just wanted to know which one would be more beneficial because I was thinking Cold-pressed.

      Thanks.

I would like to also add Honey is a great moisturizer. For the past week ( every other day), I have done the baking soda scrub in the shower, then cleaned my face with my usual face wash. Once I get out, I apply lemon juice to the blackhead prone areas and put honey all over as a mask. Let it set for 5 mins and rinse with cool water. The honey is enough, that I don't have to add anything to my usually dry skin! Just in this week alone, I can tell a difference and so can the hubby. I put on just chapstick to go run an errand and he asked me why did I put on makeup? That was a huge complaint to me!

I wash my face daily with baking soda. From the first use my husband noticed a change and complimented me on my skin. Much more fool proof than oil washing which I was really nervous to try. I have acne, papules (small red bumps that never turn to white heads) cyst that are awfully painful, ugly and scarring, and blackheads , plus acne scars. Yup I'm a winner!! Yet within a week I could see a major difference in scars and white heads who? My scars were not magically gone but my skin was so much more supple and shinny that the scars were a lot less visible. Now due to the change in my skin texture they are starting to "fill in" and dark spots have faded. It felt like my skin was getting an oxygen treatment all day long. I went ahead and used a homemade toner/ astringent with apple cider vinegar, really watered down so as not to over kill my skin and olive oil after everything. Go ahead and use the olive oil. I know oily skin, plus oil? but it really works and makes your skin feel great.better than any expensive moisturizer because your skin absorbs it and all of the benefits instead of waiting for a greasy lotion to dry on your face . The first time I have had results and actual improvement in my skin not just suppressing or covering up the acne for once I actually feel like I have great skin. Grab yourself some cute containers and buy in bulk! You wont have to wait for results and it feels great to be in charge of your acne and skin care for once.

I am currently trying the egg white method and I have several questions that I'll be glad if one of you would answer:

      1. I took the white out of 2 eggs and put it in a bowl. I whipped it diligently for as many time I can remember but it won't transform to be as white as in the picture provided above. If it iss still clear, would it be less effective to be applied in our face?

      2. out of 2 eggs I only used very few of them. Is it okay if I wrapped the bowl with plastic wrap and save it in my drawer so that I can still use it tommorow or the day after tommorow?

It's not about the grammar. Geez, grammar nazis are not welcome here, it's about skin care.

Anyway. I tried baking soda and it works just fine just don't over do it, it'll irritate ur skin.

I'm now shy meeting new people because they might tease me, because of my acne problem. do you think all of this will be effective for me? i'm also now afraid of using commercial products bucause, instead of removing/reducing my acne scars it just might make my face more missarable. i also have acne scars on my back and on my breast part. please help me.. :'((

Glad to know that the use of Olive oil for the face is becoming popular now. I used to go to the dermatologist because of 3-4 pimples that was really bothering me. She prescribed tretinoin .025% and it worked really well but you need a heavy moisturizer because it is really drying. Now, i just use olive oil for whiteheads and blackheads and it works well for me.

I tried using baking soda once, and i did not like the effect on my face. Many people swear by it and I guess I'm just not one of them. Or maybe i did not do the process correctly.

DermalMD Acne Serum is a good product. It is effective on acne but does not dry the area around the blemish, which is key. I am pretty picky and have been happy with this for spot treatment.

These scars can be quite difficult to shift and often the only way is by using make-up.

I have acne problem and I have been wanting to find a way to reduce the acne marks and scars, while treating acne at same time. I use proactiv and it has benzoyl peroxide. Normally fading mark agents such as Retinol seems to work opposite with benzoyl peroxide. It makes the mark darker. Dermelastic serum worked perfectly on my skin even using Proactiv. I simply apply it over Proactiv solutions and sleep overnight. My skin looks very refreshed and my acne marks are fading noticeably.
