No More Hair of the Dog for Hangovers!
No More Hair of the Dog for Hangovers!

Hair Of The Dog No More

If you have ever awakened after over-indulging in a bit of the bubbly, feeling worse than death, you are definitely not alone! Contrary to popular belief, however, the good ol' "hair of the dog" will only make you feel worse in the long run. What you really need are some sanctifying home remedies that will reduce the size of your massive head and get you up off that couch so you don't waste yet another entire day in a purple haze of misery. Listed here are 11 hangover cures that really work! Trust me, I have tried EVERY LAST ONE! Simple, yet effective. By using a combination of these methods, your hangover will soon be a thing of your sorted past allowing you to be off to another party!

Some juice every day will help keep the hangover away!
Some juice every day will help keep the hangover away!

1. Pour Yourself Some Passion Fruit

Drinking fruit juice, which naturally contains fructose, will help you burn the alcohol out of your system faster. Whether it be orange, tomato, grapefruit, or your favorite passion fruit, the fructose content is the key to the cure! Plus, fruit juice is delicious and packed with Vitamin C, which is great for your immune system!

Eggs are Not Just for Chickens Anymore!

2. Eggs Are Not Just For Chickens Anymore!

Did you know that eating eggs can help cure a hangover? This is because eggs contain a natural protein called albumin. Albumin has an osmotic effect that helps to rehydrate your cells after the dehydrating effects of the alcohol. Eat them any way you want — fried, scrambled, poached or better yet, raw! The effect is marvelous.

Eating crackers with honey on them is yet another way to flush the alcohol out of your system. Honey contains a very concentrated amount of fructose that, again, rids the body of alcohol faster.

4. Try Some Willow Bark

Got a mean headache? Try some willow bark! It is an organic pain reliever that contains a natural form of aspirin. This little girl loves it! I hope she doesn't overdose!

There's No Bull in Bouillon

5. There's No Bull in Bouillon

Get better with boullion as it replaces the potassium and salt that your body peed out when you drank last night! Simply mix the cubes in a hot cup of water, and you will be better in no time.

6. Take the Niacin Flush

Alcohol is a toxin and niacin has fantastic detoxifying properties! As it dilates your blood vessels, it increases blood flow through your entire body. The combination of increased blood flow and the additional histamine effect that it produces, allows toxins to be removed from the cells and then get filtered out of your body through your kidneys. Initially, it will feel a bit strange, but it really works! If you don't like the flushed feeling or the itchiness that is truly an indication that it is working, try the time release capsules that won't produce this effect.

Let the River Flow!

7. Make Your Body An Oasis With H2O

Drink plenty of water to replenish your dehydrated cells. Do so on the night that you drink, before you go to bed and immediately when you rise in the morning to relieve the effects of the hangover.

Plop Plop Fizz Fizz!

8. Plop Plop, Fizz Fizz! Oh What a Relief It Is!

Just from my own experience, taking an Alka Seltzer before bed if you have partied hardy, and also when you rise in the morning after the fact, will help heal your throbbing head. Add the willow bark or 2 aspirin with the Alka Seltzer and the combined effect will prove itself a worthy cure.

Buddy Up with B-Complex Vitamins

9. Buddy Up With B-Complex

When you drink, your body becomes drained of stress-relieving, B complex vitamins. Taking your B-complex before you go to bed and then again when you wake can help reduce the stress that your body is experiencing from the physiological effects of the hangover.

10. Heal Your Hangover With Building Blocks!

When you drink, your body is also deprived of amino acids, which are the building blocks of protein. You can easily replace them by eating a high-protein meal. Beef, chicken, and fish contain all the essential amino acids. Soy products and amaranth, a leafy green food consumed primarily in Asia and the Mediterranean, also do. I know, who feels like cooking with a hangover! Don't worry, purchasing amino acid supplements from the health food store will work just as well.

Caffeinalicious!
Caffeinalicious!

11. Have a Nice Cup of Joe!

Last but not least, try drinking a few cups of coffee with your hangover. The caffeine in the coffee acts as a vasoconstrictor that helps to shrink dilated blood vessels that are causing your headache. Better yet have a cup of hot tea with honey in it and kill two birds with one stone!

Conclusion

We all like to have fun, and it is ok, as long as we are willing to pay the price! It is my hope that with these super-duper hangover cures, the price of drinking for each of you will be a little less expensive!

Niacin helps with hangovers, but it's probably because it's essential in the production of NAD+. As ethanol is metabolized, it passes electrons to NAD+ in the form of hydride ions to form NADH. If you deplete the NAD+ available, there could be accumulation of acetaldehyde, which is an intermediate in this process and causes the symptoms associated with hangovers.

Don't forget about fresh air! Too bad I'm too hungover to get out of bed to get some, or try any of these cures. :(

The juice really helps. (Wish I had some now.) Coffee definitely after some hydration, though. I will have to try the aminos and alka in the near future! Boullion cubes and water sounds sketchy, but I bet it works, too.

Odwalla Superfood is the ultimate hangover cure. It's undiscovered but is the obvious if you read all the incredients on there. I am an alkie and I live by the Superfood right after a night of heavy heavy drinking.

The only thing is, you need to drink at least two of the small bottles in a day, but you can suppliment all the other fruits/vitamins/water that people are suggesting.

      @ Cory

How did you pass out from taking Niacin???

      That's just plain weird!

But for me, I take two Excedrin Migraine pills before bed, along with a nice Multi-Vitamin- and if I'm not "too" trashed, then I drink a, "XXX- Vitamin Water" as well. You have to pee really freaking bad in the morning, but its worth it! Plus I find that drinking juice and taking a couple more vitamins throughout the day also is very helpful--and for some reason burritos are good hangover food.

      Happy Drinking! Haha. :)

I wouldn't suggest Niacin on a hangover. I have taken Niacin several times, but the one time I took it after drinking on an empty stomach, I passed out.

This is the best – you should have it on your site.

Nevasic (find it on line ) stops the sick feeling so you can get on taking the other stuff. They never intended it for hangovers- it was for morning sickness and travel sickness and drug sickness like chemo. But wow this works for the hangover.

Its not a drug- it’s a medically classified audio programme that does something to your balance in the ears, and just stops you feeling sick. It stopped room helicopters for me too!

Unfortunately If you have a hangover, reading this, a mainly white page, hurts... I'm off to have egg's, fruit juice and some honey... If that doesn't work i'm seriously going to consider removing my head.....

Taking a sauna (which i happen to have) detoxes the body ridiculously fast. 1 hour of sweating in a dry sauna does the equivelent of what your liver does in 24 hours (the skin is the largest organ of the body). If you are a man be prepared to sweat approx 1 quart in an hour so hydrate with 24oz of gatorade plus 2-3 12 oz bottles of water. The Swedes know where its at! Recommended Temperature 160-180 for beginners. I take it around 200f with occasional steam.

Coffee (forms of caffeine)dehydrate the body and I would not recommend it. Try water, water, water, bananas, small amounts of protein, and sleep.

In reading all the cures, I could not help but think if one that is even better, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure."

And a little prevention lets you remember how much fun you thought you were having.

I've managed not to drink for about 18 years now. I gave it up just after I turned 21. I did all my serious drinking in high school and in the Navy. I was in the Navy for 3 years. Man.... did we do some drinking. Crazy!!!!

I could of used this hub a few years back. Great information!!

ok added you to my remedies section on my hangover hub.. can you add a link to mine in yours? may help people understand why the pain happens. and Misha, you seem to know something about cultural hangovers, I suggest you make a hub on remedies for different cultures! I'd gladly link to it in all my hangover hubs and suggest it to all of my hubies :)

very cool! I need to link this to my hub as it takes off where mine left off.. very good comments but be sure to drink water BEFORE you drink coffee or the effects of the coffee dehydrating you will make the hangover worse! I'd say one glass of water (2 pref) before the coffee should both counter the dehydration effect and rehydrate your body too.. great hub.

American's like a Bloody Mary. But, I remember one time I had a hangover and was flying from Las Vegas back here and said, I think I will have a couple of Bloody Mary's to feel better....Oh my, I got the worst headache....anyway, I guess it works for some, but I don't care for it.

The most pleasant light to my eyes, all your tips are very good - and I bet they work very good. :D

      for Americans :P

Russian have a different metabolism probably. Russians prefer a shot of very cold vodka with a pickle, and a glass of a pickle brine... Trust me, it makes wanders :D

PS It does not eliminate the need to drink *a lot* of H2O both before sleep and after ;) This one seems to work with any metabolism :D
