How to Soothe a Sore Throat With Common Kitchen Ingredients
Few people would dispute the fact that sore throats are the worst. You're in constant searing pain, you're coughing all over strangers in the subway, your voice sounds like death, and you're up all night and consequently look like a zombie who's recently been in a bar fight. We've all been there. Plus, if you're anything like me you avoid pharmaceutical drugs like the plague you're now infected with. What's a zombie to do?!
Luckily, there are a few basic ingredients you probably have in your kitchen right this moment that, when properly prepared, can lead to huge relief and faster healing time for your woebegone jugular. Read on for my patented, tried-and-true miracle tonic recipe.
The Key: Fresh Ginger
Fresh ginger is indisputably amazing for your general health. For those who don't yet know, ginger is a root commonly found in Asian cuisines and has a pleasantly sharp, herbaceous tang that complements almost any other flavor from sweet to savory to spicy. Research shows this potent root is effective in easing ailments like digestive issues, nausea, muscle pain, and inflammation, not to mention boosting your immune system. In this case, ginger will ease the inflammation in your throat and nasal passages, leading to substantial breathing relief.
Start by peeling and finely slicing or grating your fresh ginger root into about two cups of water in a small pot. Heat the ginger water to a boil, then bring down to a simmer and continue simmering until the water has taken on a nice brown tinge.
The Other Key: Raw Honey
Like many other raw foods, honey that hasn't undergone heat treatment retains all of its amazing nutritional benefits. Not only will it soothe your throat pain, but the high level of antioxidants contained in this magic substance will revive that immune system in no time. Bonus points for getting local honey, which has the added advantage of helping immunize against any regional allergens that may be bugging you.
Once your ginger tincture has browned nicely and become fragrant, stir in a solid tablespoon of raw honey before adding the rest of your ingredient arsenal.
The Rest (Who Are We Kidding, They're all Key)
After you've stirred in your yummy magic bee goop, add the rest:
- 1/2 to a full teaspoon of apple cider vinegar
- The juice of about 1/4 of a lemon
- A dash of turmeric (like ginger, turmeric is better when fresh grated, but as it can be harder to come by you can use the powdered kind in a pinch)
- A really, really tiny sprinkle of cayenne pepper (optional, but great for opening up clogged sinuses)
And that's it! Pour your miracle cure into your most comforting mug and sip until it's gone. The heat will help soothe your throat and the ingredients should start working their magic almost immediately.
In a Super Tight Pinch...
If I'm dealing with a lot of congestion and don't have all my normal ingredients handy, here's a quick fix:
Add about 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon to two tablespoons of raw honey in a small bowl. Literally just eat with a spoon. Yes, it's a delicious healthy alternative for dessert, but more importantly this combination is an absolute miracle for clearing up nasal congestion. It never fails to help me breathe.
