As we age, many of us get age spots – little, flat brown spots that pop up pretty much anywhere on the body. Most of them appear on the face, neck and hands, causing those who have them to be self-conscious about them.

So what exactly are they? And how can you get rid of them?

Age spots themselves are harmless, but they can be a sign that you are undergoing more serious underlying problems. The skin is often taken for granted, but it is the largest organ of the body and one of the first places you will receive tell-tale signs when something is going wrong inside.

Age spots are the result of a buildup of wastes called lipofuscin accumulation. This waste is a by-product of free radical damage in the skin cells. The spots are a sign that the cells are full of accumulated wastes that slowly deteriorate and destroy all the body's cells, including brain and liver cells. They are a sign at the surface that there is free radical intoxication within the body.

What Causes Age Spots?

There are several lifestyle factors that can contribute to the formation of age spots. Poor diet, smoking, improper liver function, a lack of exercise and the ingestion of toxins over time can all contribute. Alcohol consumption also increases the formation of age spots. The most common reason however is excessive sun exposure. Most people with an abundance of age spots live in very sunny climates or routinely expose themselves to tanning beds and other harmful practices.

The formation of age spots is also associated with nutrient deficiencies, including vitamin E, selenium, chromium, and dimethyl-aminoethanol (DMAE).

How to Prevent and Reverse Age Spots

  • Eat a diet that consists of at least 60% or higher raw fruits and vegetables. Get your proteins from plant sources like spirulina, chlorella, quinoa, organic non-GMO soy. Eat raw nuts and seeds and small amounts of 100% whole grains.
  • Avoid animal based proteins, fried foods, saturated and trans-fats, sugar, processed foods and tobacco. Limit alcohol intake.
  • Periodically, you may want to do a cleanse, particularly one that focuses on the liver to help rid the body of excess toxins. Dandelion root is excellent for this.
  • Limit sun exposure and do not use tanning beds.
  • Avoid using commercial cleansers on the face if you are prone to facial spots. Wash your face with a natural, gentle scrub made from coconut oil and sugar or sea salt. Coconut oil nourishes the skin and has anti-inflammatory properties. Chemicals in skin creams are often loaded with toxins, particularly ones with artificial fragrance.
  • Dab fresh lemon juice onto the spots daily for 15 minutes (avoid sensitive areas around the eyes). Over time this has a natural lightening effect.
  • Apple cider vinegar can also be placed directly on spots daily to help fade them. In addition, taking a cider vinegar supplement daily can help accelerate the healing process and fade spots even faster when combined with other therapies.
  • Lotions with retinol or retin-A are very good at fading sunspots, however, when retinol (vitamin A) is used in the presence of sunlight it can create more skin damage. Always avoid sunscreens that contain Vitamin A.

Topical Treatments

There are several natural ingredients to look for when it comes to minimizing spots and promoting healthy skin. Find them in serums, creams or you can even create a DIY cream if you are adventurous or simply want to save money.

  • Vitamin C Serum: This can be purchased inexpensively online. Put it directly on the skin at night to brighten the skin and also to reverse damage. For added benefits look for a vitamin C serum that is blended with Alpha Hyaluronic Acid as well. It moisturizes, reduces wrinkles by plumping the skin and helps prevent dehydration of the skin cells.
  • Apple Cider Vinegar: Not the cheap stuff in the grocery aisle, but a good brand like Braggs that has "the mother" in it. Blend half and half with lemon juice and apply topically to heal the skin and fade spots.
  • Papaya: Make a paste with fresh fruit and apply, or find a nice cream that has this in it. Papaya contains a natural enzyme that fades dark spots.

Supplements to Prevent & Control Age Spots

Vitamin B Complex: Vitamin B helps in the assimilation of all nutrients, provides energy and supports proper adrenal gland function.

Vitamin C: Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant and free radical scavenger that is needed by the body for tissue repair.

Vitamin E: Vitamin E protects cell membranes, improves circulation and fights aging.

Calcium and Magnesium: These need to be taken together for best absorption and assimilation.

CoEnzyme A: Supports the immune system's ability to detox from many pollutants

Grape Seed Extract: Grape Seed Extract, not to be confused with GSE (grapefruit seed extract), is a powerful antioxidant that can help prevent the formation of age spots.

Lecithin: Take it with Vitamin E for best synthesis. It works well as an antioxidant and is needed for healthy cell membranes.

Herbs to Prevent Age Spots and Repair Skin Damage

Red Clover and burdock both have diuretic properties that help excrete waste from the body. These herbs are a good companion treatment to other remedies since they can enhance blood circulation and cleansing.

Ginkgo Biloba is used primarily to improve cognitive function, however it may also work to prevent and reverse age spots. It contains antioxidants that stop free radicals from attacking healthy cells. This allows the body to heal naturally and may prevent further damage.

Milk Thistle is an effective liver cleanser, helping it to better manage and process toxins.

Rosemary promotes healthy circulation and also provides a healthy dose of antioxidants.

Ginkgo, by far, is one of my favorite herbal supplements. It helps keep my mind sharp and focused for work and it has amazing effects on my skin because if I'm honest, I love being out in the sun a little too much!

I have a couple of age spots on my face and have been wondering what to do about them. Thanks for the timely information. Also glad you pointed out in your comments about the effects of sunblock products. There have always been conflicting reports on the benefits.

Great informative hub! I am starting to get more and more age spots. Probably from all the sun exposure I had when I was young. Growing up in the 70's sunscreen didn't always happened.

Thanks Laura, I didn't forget high SPF sunscreen - I left it out because most of it is also full of toxins and the stuff that has a "very high SPF" is factually false, in fact the FDA is even cracking down on them. Of 500 sunscreens available commercially - only 39 get the recommendation of the environmental working group. Sunscreens with vitamin A in them that I did mention actually cause cancer when applied in the sun. It is very important to not buy into a lot of the marketing ploys with sunscreen.

If you choose to use commercial sunscreen use one that is labeled "broad spectrum" otherwise it does you no good.

This is great information! I'm paranoid about skin cancer (it runs in my family), and get freckles very easily (no age spots yet, thank goodness). Your article is jam-packed with realistic solutions. Thanks!! I have to point out that you missed one obvious solution--use high-SPF sunscreen every day on every part of your skin that's visible and wear cover-ups (dark color) and hats. Go crazy and buy CLOTHING with SPF built into it. These things prevent age spots from even forming if you are diligent. They also make you look younger, something we all secretly want.
