Is It Safe to Use Melatonin With Ambien?

Updated on November 4, 2017

Ambien Was a Lifesaver for Me

Several years ago, I was having horrible problems with insomnia. As much as I wanted to, I was having problems falling asleep or staying asleep for more than a few hours at a time. Things got so bad that I decided to see my doctor about my sleeping problems. After a quick physical exam, I was given a prescription for Ambien to help me sleep.

Needless to say, the Ambien worked great. I could take an Ambien tablet (also known by the generic name zolpidem) and be asleep within 30 minutes. Within a few weeks, I was able to get back to a "normal" sleep schedule and I was feeling much better. This continued for over a year—Ambien really was a medication that changed my life.

Ambien Stopped Working Over Time

After about a year of using Ambien, I began to find that occasionally, the drug would not immediately put me to sleep, and I would still be left tossing and turning despite taking it as prescribed. These nights were few and far between, and overall, the zolpidem was still working great for me. However, the sleepless nights caused me enough trouble that I decided to mention the problem to my psychiatrist.

It IS Safe to Supplement Your Ambien With Melatonin

The doctor completely understood my problem and told me it wasn't horribly uncommon. She suggested that on those sleepless nights that I try to take some melatonin in addition to the Ambien. Melatonin is a naturally occurring substance in the human body that helps to regulate sleep. My doctor told me that Ambien's effect on the body is unrelated to natural sleep processes and that I could combine with melatonin as often as I needed to.

The combination worked great, and on the nights where Ambien was not enough to put me to sleep, the melatonin tablets definitely did the trick. I like using the melatonin because it is all-natural, and I'm not just putting more and more drugs into my body. Only your doctor can say for sure what the right sleep treatment is for you, but most everyone agrees that it is perfectly safe to combine melatonin supplements with prescription Ambien. The combo has made a huge difference in my life.

Talk to your doctor about whether or not this combination might be right for you, too.

I have a medical marijuana card in Michigan but work in Wisconsin and my employer does not honor my med marijuana card. I take ambien for sleep and it does not always work. Gonna try n combine melatonin for better results with sleep. The bad part is I need to take combinations of stupid pills in order to obtain a good night's rest. If the cheese heads would just honor my card and allow me to smoke a bowl after work I would sleep well every night and not need pills. I don't use marijuana before or during work (or unfortunately at all anymore) so what I do on my time should be my business not theirs.
