What Is Candid Cream?

Candid cream is an anti-fungal cream preparation manufactured by Glenmark Pharmaceuticals. It is commonly used to treat yeast infections of the skin such as athlete's foot, jock itch, and body ringworm.

The active ingredient is clotrimazole, which is an azole group anti-fungal medication that is widely used in external fungal infections.

This preparation should not be confused with Candid-B cream, which contains the steroid beclomethasone dipropionate in addition to clotrimazole, and is used to alleviate the symptoms of fungal infection. Plain Candid cream does not contain the steroid and does not relieve the inflammation and itchiness associated with fungal infections.

Uses

This medication should only be used following a doctor's prescription. Accurate diagnosis of a fungal infection is essential to ensure recovery. Without a doctor's examination, it's possible to mistake a bacterial infection for a fungal infection.

The cream can be used in mild fungal infections such as ringworm, jock itch, and athlete's foot that do not have significant itchiness and inflammation. It is a skin preparation and should not be applied on the mouth, lips, or tongue. For yeast infections of the mouth, you should use Candid Mouth Paint.

The cream can also be applied inside the vagina to treat vaginal fungal infections. However, it should be used alongside vaginal anti-fungal tablets like Candid-V1, -V3, or -V6, or an oral anti-fungal preparation such as Fluconazole.

How to Use

Candid cream is usually used for two to eight weeks for fungal skin infections. Follow the directions on the package or your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand.

Use exactly as directed. Do not use more or less of it, or use it more often than prescribed by your doctor.

To use the cream, thoroughly clean the infected area, allow it to dry, and then gently rub the medication in until most of it disappears. Use just enough medication to cover the affected area. You should wash your hands after applying the medication.

Use the cream for four weeks for athlete's foot and two weeks for jock itch or body ringworm. If your symptoms do not improve by that time, stop using the medication and consult either a pharmacist or doctor.

Side Effects

Generally, this is a well-tolerated skin preparation that has minimal side effects. However, people allergic to clorimazole or any ingredient in the preparation can experience some of the following symptoms. If you do have symptoms, stop using the cream immediately and call your doctor. Side effects include:

  • Itching
  • Burning
  • Irritation
  • Redness
  • Swelling
  • Stomach pain
  • Fever

There are no other significant side effects of this medication since it does not enter into the blood in significant quantities when applied onto the skin.

Before Using Candid Cream

Before starting any medical treatment, you should take all necessary precautions to make sure the treatment is right for you.

  • Have your infection inspected by a doctor to ensure it is a fungal (and not a bacterial) infection.
  • Tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to clotrimazole or any other drugs.
  • Tell your doctor and pharmacist what prescription and nonprescription drugs you are taking, especially antibiotic medications and vitamins.
  • Tell your doctor if you have or have ever had liver disease, problems with your immune system, human immunodeficiency virus infection (HIV), acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), diabetes, or a history of alcohol abuse.
  • Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding. If you become pregnant while using clotrimazole, call your doctor.
  • Tell your doctor if you drink alcohol.

See a doctor before starting any course of treatment.

Other Important Information

Keep all appointments with your doctor. Candid cream, lotion, and solution are for external use only. Do not let it get into your eyes. Do not swallow the topical cream, lotion, or solution.

Do not let anyone else use your medication. Ask your pharmacist any questions you have about refilling your prescription. If you still have symptoms of infection after you finish the cream, call your doctor.

It is important for you to keep a written list of all of the prescription and nonprescription (over-the-counter) medicines you are taking, as well as any products such as vitamins, minerals, or other dietary supplements. You should bring this list with you each time you visit a doctor or if you are admitted to a hospital. It is also important information to carry with you in case of emergencies.
